Neuroscience Center
Welcome to Central Baptist Neuroscience Center! What is “neuroscience” anyway? If it has to do with your brain, spine or nerves, we can take care of it. Established in early 2004, CBH Neuroscience Center has developed and refined many programs. We offer the following:
We are a JCAHO-certified Primary Stroke Care Center!
In June 2006, CBH Stroke Program was awarded JCAHO certification as a Primary Stroke Center. This is a designation held by only three other hospitals in the state of Kentucky and 430 hospitals nationally. This certifies that the stroke program meets the rigorous requirements set forth by JCAHO in cooperation with the American Heart and American Stroke Associations. You can be assured that at CBH, you will receive great stroke care which includes:
What should you know about stroke? THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY! IF YOU HAVE SIGNS OF A STROKE, CALL 911!
What are the symptoms of a stroke?
YOU HAVE THREE HOURS FROM THE TIME OF STROKE SYMPTOM ONSET TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A “CLOT-BUSTING” DRUG WHICH COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE FROM DEATH OR DISABILITY!!!! There is no time to wait and wonder if you will get better on your own. Don’t call your doctor. Don’t drive yourself to the hospital. Studies have shown that the quickest route to care is via 911 and ambulance transport. Stroke can devastate your life. It is TRULY better to be safe than sorry!
What is the treatment for stroke?
If your brain is injured by a stroke, brain tissue does not regenerate. Thus, the functions that the stroke-affected portion of your brain control, are lost or damaged – many times permanently! This is why treatment within 3 hours of symptom onset with the clot-busting drug, tPA, is so crucial. It is the only FDA-approved treatment that has shown the ability to reverse, partially or completely, the effects of a stroke. Without this drug, stroke remains an irreversible injury to the brain and the leading cause of disability in the U.S.
Some stroke centers, like Central Baptist, do offer special services that can extend that treatment window somewhat. For instance, doctors at Central Baptist can administer tPA directly into the brain at the site of the clot through a minimally invasive procedure. The ability to do this extends the treatment window to 6 hours from the onset of stroke symptoms.
In addition, CBH is involved in research into new ways of treating stroke through clinical trials – some of which extend that window for treatment to an even longer time. These treatments are only available through stroke centers such as CBH.
Bottom line…if you experience stroke symptoms, call 911 and go to the nearest hospital and insist on being evaluated to receive tPA.

prevention and treatment. For more information, call 260-5500.
Neuroscience Center and a nurse, will be available at your request to review your questions with you and act as your advocate and liaison. We understand that the hospital is a intimidating place for most people. We want you to understand every aspect of your care and participate in treatment choices fully. A consult with the director can be obtained by calling 260-5500.
CBH is a nationally recognized center for carotid artery stenting. The traditional method for treating occlusion of the large blood vessels that feed the brain has been to surgically open the patient’s neck and “ream out” the fatty substance which has accumulated there in order to restore flow. CBH has participated in 7 national clinical trials and CBH physicians wrote the paper which was referenced by Medicare when they decided to approve the procedure for payment. With the stenting procedure, a minimally invasive non-surgical approach is used to access the clogged, large vessels. A stent is placed in the vessel which acts like a small umbrella which extends open to restore the vessel opening and thus, blood flow to the brain. For more information, call 260-5500.
Since stroke is a medical emergency, CBH has invested in care systems that respond rapidly to the stroke patient. If you enter our emergency with stroke symptoms, you WILL NOT WAIT. You will be immediately evaluated and given a CT scan to assess your symptoms. All of this will be done within a VERY short time in order to give you the best opportunity to take advantage of the range of immediate stroke treatments available at our center. Everyone at our hospital received special training in stroke recognition and response. The direct caregivers in stroke are required to become certified in special areas that equip them to deal effectively with stroke. This rapid response to stroke is also assured for the patient who may have a stroke while in the hospital for other illnesses. This does happen occasionally, but if it does happen, Central Baptist is the place to be to insure that you will get rapid recognition and treatment for the stroke.
Central Baptist is a unique community hospital in its support of research. We have a full department of nurses and others who can work with you to explain the clinical trials in which we are participating and how they may benefit you.
Currently, we are participating in carotid stent research, research in cardiovascular devices, studies to improve blood flow to the brain in stroke acutely and many other efforts. You will be fully informed if you qualify for any studies that may help you and it is solely your informed decision to move forward.
Unlike many traditional academic settings, in our hospital, you will not be treated by students of medicine, but by physicians with years of experience. You will also be able to participate in research in a private hospital setting which many patients prefer while receiving the best, most current care available in ANY setting.
WE OFFER SUPERIOR SPINE CARE IN A COORDINATED SETTING!
CBH is proud to off a wide array of services to those who suffer back pain. We understand that you have “shopped” around the healthcare system seeking to get relief. We want you to know that the caregivers in our spine program TALK to one another to problem solve about your care challenges. We incorporate practitioners including neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, nurses, pain medicine physicians, physical therapists and chiropractors into your treatment plan as needed to insure that no one is missing a piece of your “pain puzzle” as we seek to get you back on your feet.
We work closely with spine surgeons who are some of the most experienced in the country in performing minimally invasive back surgery. Most of the time, this procedure doesn’t even require stitches or staples to close the wound – just a simple bandage and you are back on your feet. In this surgery, the muscles are not cut to access the bone in your spine for surgery. The muscles are gently separated and gradually stretched open by a graduated set of tubes – just enough for the surgeon to use a scope to see the surgical site and make the necessary repairs. In most cases, you are home within 4 hours after the surgery.
Click Here for an animation of the minimal access procedure and/or do a video of Dr. Bean talking about the surgery. Also, put a question and answer link here saying, “If you want to know if your are a candidate for a minimally invasive back surgery or have others questions regarding your spine care, e-mail ________, or call 260-5500.
Our expertise in spine is not limited to minimal access spine surgery, we also have surgeons who have vast experience in “renovation” of previous back surgery failures and deformity of the spine caused by age and arthritis.
We also offer minimally invasive surgical solutions to those with compression fractures of the vertebrae as well as spinal stenosis – both conditions that are very painful, but have been slow to respond to surgical solutions. For compression fractures, we offer kyphoplasty. In this outpatient procedure, we inflate a small balloon to restore height to the compressed vertebra and then fill it with a substance that maintains that height for good! This process frees the nerves and spinal structures that have been “trapped” within that compressed vertebra. Most patients report immediate and dramatic pain relief. For spinal stenosis, we offer the newest solution for patients in a device called the “X-stop”. In an outpatient procedure, this small device is inserted between two vertebrae and it literally creates more space for the nerves and other structures to rest where they were previously crowded by bone overgrowth. This new procedure also offers immediate and dramatic pain relief in eligible patients.

Dr. William Ackerman is our Director of CBH Pain Medicine. He has spent a career doing research in pain medicine – specifically gender-specific medicine and difficult pain syndromes such are CRPS or RSD. Dr. Ackerman is a caring, compassionate doctor who really listens to his patients. He is able to problem solve in difficult cases as his mind is open to all possibilities and he is always piecing pain puzzles together to help patients when others have failed. Dr. Ackerman is able to manage your pain medically. For those patients who need to try a spinal injection to assist in managing their pain, his office is equipped to handle the procedure conveniently right there in his office – usually at the time of your office visit- saving you time and money. Dr. Ackerman’s creed is to “do the right thing” for his patients.
CBH physical therapy offers therapists with special training in managing back pain. They have two convenient locations-on the CBH campus in the 1800 building and at 1775 Alysheba Way in Hamburg. They work hand-in-hand with the physicians to manage you care and recovery.
We recognize the value that non-traditional healthcare providers bring to patients and honor that role in addressing the patient’s needs wholly. Since chiropractors participate in providing care to many back pain patients, CBH has formed an alliance network with many of these providers throughout the state of Kentucky.
If your chiropractic provider is in the CBH network, you can rest assured that they have gone through a review process to become part of that network and approved by a group of their peers for entry. Many of them have also chosen to become part of the allied health staff at our hospital so they can access the diagnostic and educational resources provided by the hospital as they plan your care. Natural Healthcare with Chiropractic and Rehabilitation
Statement of Treatment Philosophy:
Julie Ann Martin Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, Inc. has a goal to help its
patients achieve the best state of health they possible can achieve naturally
with chiropractic care. We hope to bring our patients to a level of good health
and then work with them to maintain that level of health for the rest of their
lives.
In order to achieve this goal, we use manipulation of the spine and other joints, rehabilitation, massage, and soft tissue modalities. We use passive and active care, and we work with our patients to help them understand how to take care of themselves with exercise, stretching, and with regular chiropractic care and check ups.
