Should College Coaches Be Recruiting 8th-Graders?

University of Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie is making national news by dipping into middle schools to recruit future players. He recently offered a scholarship to an 8th grader, and he’s going after 9th graders too. As a Kentucky fan, I think this is great. As the father of an 8th grader, I think it’s insane.

Hail to Single Moms!

Single mothers get a lot of flak. They’re often blamed for their situation, and blamed for raising kids who have trouble. Rarely are they honored for trying hard to be good parents, and for succeeding most of the time. In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, here’s a toast to the single mothers who, these days, raise about one in four American kids.

Is Divorce Worse for the Husband or Wife?

We’ve long believed that divorce hits the woman hardest. In most cases, women tend to lose income, studies show, while men gain. This may or may not be true — new research is examining some of the assumptions — but it is almost certainly true that men are worse off emotionally after a divorce.
