When it comes to temperatures, this week should be a pretty simple forecast to memorize: highs in the 80s, lows in the mid to upper 60s. The forecast precipitation-wise is a bit trickier though. Wednesday and the weekend look to be the best opportunities for some soaking showers and thunderstorms. Otherwise, there will be on and off changes for rain throughout the week. But what about the extended forecast?

In a nutshell, the start of July is falling right in tune with the long range summer outlook made earlier this year on the blog: the summer is looking cool. The chance for seeing any 90 degree temperatures in the near future is looking pretty low.

We all know that rising gas prices are causing a rise in other prices, including food. We’ve seen how hurricanes (or even hurricane forecasts) can shake up prices; this year, though, it’s the flooding that may be making the food you eat a little harder to swallow.

The SPC has handed down a moderate risk for portions of Kentucky. Also, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for all of eastern Kentucky until 9pm Saturday night.

For most of the week on Mountain News This Morning, we’ve been talking about the potential for some stronger storms for the weekend. The best chance for severe storms here in eastern Kentucky will be Saturday, primarily during the afternoon and evening hours. But where is the greatest potential for strong storms Friday, Saturday, and Sunday?

This week is Lightning Safety Week. On the average, lightning kills more people each year than tornadoes. Every thunderstorm contains lightning, and each stroke has the potential to cause injury or death. Keep in mind that if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to lightning to be a potential lightning strike victim. Whenever lightning is in the area, seek shelter indoors. Remain inside until 30 minutes from the last time you heard thunder.

If you’re a fan of summer-like heat, you’re in luck. You’ll want to hit the pool later on this week and parts of next week. Temperatures sliding up into the upper 80s and close to 90° looks to be a good bet later this week and into the second half of next. But with moisture and heat returning, a daily chance of showers and thunderstorms - some potentially on the strong side - into this weekend.
