This past weekend, Berea police arrested Bobby Jones saying he did not protect his two-year-old son from the sun.  Police say the child had second and third degree burns.  They had pictures of the blisters to prove it.

Crossing County Lines

So, Clark County Judge William Jennings decided to keep the trial of Patrick and Joy Watkins in Clark County.  It was somewhat of a surprise considering he seemed to be leaning toward a change of venue just two weeks ago.  But his argument did make sense.  Remember, the Watkins are accused of killing Patrick’s daughter, 10-year-old Michaela.

The Talk Of The Town…And Beyond

Did a homeowner go too far?  Or did he act within Kentucky’s Home Intruder Law?  I’m talking about the shooting on Chelsea Woods Court in Lexington.  That’s where Andreas Lobsiger was shot and killed while standing outside the home of Tadarvis Gardener.  Gardener says Lobsiger was trying to break into his home around six in the morning.  Neighbors say Lobsiger had been out drinking, and fell asleep in a van.  When he woke up, he went to the wrong house.

How Could You?

Have you heard about this new trend of putting school fights on internet sites like You Tube?  It happened here at Madison Central just last month.  A fight between two students broke out in the cafeteria.  The mother of one of the students told us it was more than a fight, it was an assualt on her son.  Someone recorded the fight, and it was on You Tube for several days.

Crimes Against Animals

In the past couple of weeks, we have seen two severe cases of animal cruelty.  The first in Jackson county where dozens of dogs were found dead and some barely alive.  Some puppies were even in the freezer at the home.  The second, in Jessamine county where 70 horses were found malnourished.  Officials there calling it one of the worst horse abuse cases they’ve ever seen.

Do The Crime, Do The Time… Or Maybe Not

Governor Beshear is backing a plan to keep some offenders out of jail.  Now, we’re not talking about murderers by any means, but we are talking about people who commit crimes that typically would get some jail time… crimes like substance abuse, not paying child support or writing bad checks.

Best Dressed

The perfect crime:  Well-dressed professional looking woman and man snatching wallets from purses.  But there’s one problem.  The surveillance video is EXCELLENT.  This story has gotten a lot of hits on our website this week.  A man and woman snatching wallets then walking out of the stores with two televisions at a time in some cases.  Police say they’ve been doing it for months!

Doing A Job vs. Being Disrespectful

Posted in Uncategorized by mcombs on the February 4th, 2008

Sometimes, reporters get a bad wrap.  Sometimes, it’s for good reason.  Sometimes, it’s not.  It’s our first and foremost job everyday to get the story..period.  Some days are more difficult than others.  For some stories, you simply call the people involved, set up an interview, and shoot it.  Other times, those involved in the story don’t want to talk.  Sometimes, as a reporter, you understand their concern, sometimes you don’t.  Sometimes, you’re surprised the person said ‘yes’ to your interview request, and are thinking the whole time…”I would never go on camera and talk about this, but, it sure is helping my story out!”

Gangs In Lexington

Posted in Uncategorized by mcombs on the January 15th, 2008

For the first time in my memory, which really only goes back about 5 years here, Lexington Police have attributed a murder to gang violence.  During last week’s arrests of seven people involved in the murder on Trailwood Lane, police said the Latin Kings were to blame.  A 15-year-old is charged with being the gunman.  Four others charged were juveniles.

As many of you know, the Boyle County man accused of killing his neighbor, Jim Trachsel, died on New Year’s Eve.  82-year-old Jack Caldwell was on trial for Trachsel’s murder at the time of his death.  Here’s a comment I think brings up some valid questions in regard to what happens next…I’d love to hear your responses.
